They crossed an ocean for children they will never meet

I'm in my final year at the IST secondary school in Cadempino. As part of my IB CAS Project, I've asked two representatives of Native American cultures, who live in Florida, to come and share their story with our schools. From 16 to 19 September, they'll be meeting pupils from a number of schools in Ticino; on 19 September, the project will conclude with an event open to everyone.

They agreed because they believed in the project: to turn an encounter between cultures into practical help for the children supported by the Epsilon Association in Africa.

Jim Sawgrass — Muscogee Creek. For over thirty years he has brought Native American history into schools.

Henry Mekseree — Comanche. Dancer and educator, keeper of his people's ceremonial dances.

Where the money goes

The goal is to raise 20,000 CHF: around 8,000 covers the running costs of the initiative, and the remaining 12,000 goes entirely to two Epsilon Association projects.

Benin — 4,000 CHF. Two patient monitors and two syringe pumps for the neonatal unit at St. Jean de Dieu Hospital in Tanguiéta: continuous monitoring of vital signs and safe delivery of treatment for newborn babies in their first four months of life. The equipment costs 6,000 CHF — 2,000 have already been raised.

Togo — 8,000 CHF. Scholarships for deserving students in Tchebebe who lack the means to continue their education. Each scholarship covers the whole course of study: enrolment, annual school fees, board and lodging, and school materials.

What a full scholarship costs:

410 CHF — four years of lower secondary school
496 CHF — three years of upper secondary school
1,766 CHF — three years of university

Epsilon runs entirely on volunteers and gives 100% of the donations it receives to its projects. Since 2005 it has completed 197 projects and supported more than 500,000 children and young people in Africa and India.

The event on 19 September

Join us on Saturday 19 September from 5.30 pm at the Suglio Business Center in Manno.
An afternoon with our two guests: personal accounts, dances and cultural performances open to the community, followed by an evening buffet. Places are by registration.
Contribution from 65 CHF (25 CHF under 10), performance and buffet included.
